Brasil, Moçambique, Portugal e Índia (Goa)


Throughout the 20th century, the phonographic industries intensified in an unprecedented way the musical circulation between countries and territories of Lusophone heritage. Local musical genres such as the samba and the maxixe in Brazil, the fado in Portugal, the marrabenta in Mozambique and the mandó in Goa, were promoted to the symbolic status of national music, becoming part of a vast and complex system of transoceanic circulation.

This section is dedicated to musicians and music makers who played a key role in building sound bridges between Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique and India (Goa), and whose trajectories are largely forgotten, due to technological obsolescence.

 

The Liber|Sound project intends to bring back to light the protagonism of these musicians, and recover for the domain of audible their voices and music stored on 78 rpm records. In this way, the project seeks to identify artists whose productions played an active role in the construction of shared sound imaginaries and also in the struggle against colonial domination.

Through documental research carried out in archives from different continents, the Liber|Sound project proposes to retrace the trajectory of these musicians. The Encyclopedia of Musicians in Transit presents an entry for each of these transnational agents, in addition to gathering discographies and iconographic and documental materials dispersed in different countries and territories.
